Session Abstract:

Case Study: Productivity Improvements in Lockbox and Payment Processing at Union Planters Bank*

Leveraging the Art and Science of Workforce Optimization Yields a 300% Return-on-Investment

Speakers: Glenda J. Reed, who served as Senior Vice President, Director of Operations Services at Union Planters**, Darryl Demos, CEO of Demos Solutions, and Chris Zaske, Director of Operations Practice.

Union Planters Bank joined forces with Demos Solutions to optimize its resources and process in both lockbox and payment processing operations. Through a hands-on pilot and extended diagnostics of Union Planters Bank's back-office, an excess capacity of 15% to 20% was identified in nearly every area, including those already performing above the industry standard (BAI) benchmark. This, in addition to the discovery of expense reductions, gave Union Planters a 300% ROI.
Workforce management requires not only scientific tools, but the art of developing the right organizational structure, processes, and performance measurement techniques, and can boost operations productivity in even the most efficient company. The improvements in the productivity of Union Planters Bank's back-office operations were of such value that the post-merger entity, Regions Financial Corporation, installed the same tools and processes in all Day 1 operations (the first day of item processing for checks).

*Union Planters Bank has since merged with Regions Bank (July 2004). **Glenda J. Reed currently serves as Executive Vice President, Chief of Operations at The South Financial Group.

Demos Solutions will run two sessions:

1. "Mastering the Art of Variable Staffing: The 8 Most Common Obstacles to Success and How to Overcome Them".

Using part-time workers enables banks to best match resources to the peaks and valleys in customer demand, providing better service at lower cost. So why is it so difficult to attract and retain good part-timers, and why do so many retail bankers want nothing to do with part-time programs?

This interactive session will show you the eight key issues that need to be addressed, and show you how best practice banks are successfully exploiting this important opportunity.

Discussions will cover:

--Segmenting your local labor markets to find the best part-time candidates
--Recruitment and pipeline forecasting
--Compensation
--Training
--Retention--Building the team
--Leveraging capacity planning and scheduling to make best use of part-time schedules

The session will also include break-out discussion groups to share best practices and issueswith your peers.

Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how variable staffing fits into branch productivity, including the role that change management plays in the successful usage of part time employees, and actionable tactics to implement your variable staffing program.

2. "Approaching Sales, Service and Cost Management: Lessons Learned from International Banking"

Banks across the globe are at varying stages of branch banking development and R&D.

Just as in North America, International banking institutions have found both success and challenges in achieving customer service and sales goals while effectively deploying people, systems and delivery resources.

In an examination of various International banking environments, notably Western Europe, Eastern Asia and Australia, this panel of International bankers and industry experts will both provide valuable insights about international branching trends, and stimulate some new thinking about how branch bankers in North American approach sales, service and cost management strategies.
